Wow! Talk about pulling at your heartstrings. There is nothing more tragic than the death of a child, but somehow this story leaves the reader feeling awe at the wisdom of children and the power of love.
In 2007, 6 year old Elena Desserich died of brain cancer. But before she did, according to the recent
Yahoo article she left hundreds of notes for her parents and sister hidden all around the house. She hid them in books, CD covers, in dressers and closets, in coloring books--everywhere. Elena's condition robbed her of the ability to speak, but certainly did not keep her from communicating.
You can also check out the
Today show's book blog. for a video about Elena, her wonderful notes, and the book her parents have written aabout the experience.

This story inspires me because it seems to teach us how wise children can be. Did Elena understand what was happening to her--that she had been diagnosed with less than one year to live? Maybe. But it does seem she understood very well how to share her love.
The Yahoo article says Elena's parents collected the notes into a book to fund their non-profit "The Cure Starts Now."
